Chapter Twenty
Rage continued to boil inside Alex as he spoke to the client. The man seemed interested, but Alex couldnât have cared less. From the window to the side of him, he could see Liz getting into the van and he was determined not to let her go. He grabbed a brochure from a pile on a nearby table and said to the man quickly, âTell you what, why donât you sleep on it? Iâm sure itâs something you need to discuss with your wife or girlfriend. Perhaps we can fix up an appointment for a private viewing? Our contact details are on the brochure.â Not even waiting for a reply, Alex dashed off after Liz.
The engine of her van was running, but he jumped in front of it before she could move. He just hoped she wouldnât accelerate into him. But, luckily, she seemed to have spotted him and wound the window down.
âAlex! You frightened the life out of me!â
âIâm sorry, Liz, but you have to listen to me. Iâm not engaged to Nikki and I never will be. She lied to you about us being together, and sheâs lying about this too.â
âShe seemed pretty convincing to me,â Liz snapped at him.
Tia stormed across the car park and joined them.
âWhat do you think youâre doing? Iâve never been so embarrassed in all my life. You realise that youâve probably lost us a sale?â
âThis is more important,â Alex said without breaking eye contact with Liz.
âWhat is? Whatâs more important than business?â
âLiz,â he said.
The two women stared at him.
âAre you two together?â Tia asked.
âNot at the moment. Thanks to Nikki. Sheâs been spreading lies, saying weâre engaged, and Liz wonât believe itâs not true.â
âYou? Engaged to Nikki?â Tia laughed. âIâve never heard anything so stupid in my life.â She turned to Liz. âAlex broke up with her the evening of my last dinner party. Sheâs in denial. At least that explains why heâs been in such a filthy mood all week. I thought he was regretting finishing it with her, but it was obviously more about you. Do me a favour and put him out of his misery, will you, Liz? Because if you donât, I may just well go bankrupt.â
He watched as relief seemed to flood Lizâs face.
âIâll leave you two to it,â Tia said. âSee what I can salvage of our business.â She looked pointedly at Alex before turning on her heel. Alex let her go, unable to take his eyes off Liz.
âWill you at least give me a second chance?â
âWell . . .â She frowned, and Alex dived in, not wanting to give her time to refuse.
âWeâve got off to a rocky start,â he said. âBut I think we can both agree thereâs something between us. Canât we at least talk about it, away from everyone else?â
She sighed as though in defeat. âYes, okay.â
âWe could go out for a meal?â
She shook her head. âNo thanks. Iâve seen enough food for one night.â
âA drink then?â
âThat would be nice. But first I need to go home.
