Chapter Twenty

Rage continued to boil inside Alex as he spoke to the client. The man seemed interested, but Alex couldn’t have cared less. From the window to the side of him, he could see Liz getting into the van and he was determined not to let her go. He grabbed a brochure from a pile on a nearby table and said to the man quickly, ‘Tell you what, why don’t you sleep on it? I’m sure it’s something you need to discuss with your wife or girlfriend. Perhaps we can fix up an appointment for a private viewing? Our contact details are on the brochure.’ Not even waiting for a reply, Alex dashed off after Liz.

The engine of her van was running, but he jumped in front of it before she could move. He just hoped she wouldn’t accelerate into him. But, luckily, she seemed to have spotted him and wound the window down.

‘Alex! You frightened the life out of me!’

‘I’m sorry, Liz, but you have to listen to me. I’m not engaged to Nikki and I never will be. She lied to you about us being together, and she’s lying about this too.’

‘She seemed pretty convincing to me,’ Liz snapped at him.

Tia stormed across the car park and joined them.

‘What do you think you’re doing? I’ve never been so embarrassed in all my life. You realise that you’ve probably lost us a sale?’

‘This is more important,’ Alex said without breaking eye contact with Liz.

‘What is? What’s more important than business?’

‘Liz,’ he said.

The two women stared at him.

‘Are you two together?’ Tia asked.

‘Not at the moment. Thanks to Nikki. She’s been spreading lies, saying we’re engaged, and Liz won’t believe it’s not true.’

‘You? Engaged to Nikki?’ Tia laughed. ‘I’ve never heard anything so stupid in my life.’ She turned to Liz. ‘Alex broke up with her the evening of my last dinner party. She’s in denial. At least that explains why he’s been in such a filthy mood all week. I thought he was regretting finishing it with her, but it was obviously more about you. Do me a favour and put him out of his misery, will you, Liz? Because if you don’t, I may just well go bankrupt.’

He watched as relief seemed to flood Liz’s face.

‘I’ll leave you two to it,’ Tia said. ‘See what I can salvage of our business.’ She looked pointedly at Alex before turning on her heel. Alex let her go, unable to take his eyes off Liz.

‘Will you at least give me a second chance?’

‘Well . . .’ She frowned, and Alex dived in, not wanting to give her time to refuse.

‘We’ve got off to a rocky start,’ he said. ‘But I think we can both agree there’s something between us. Can’t we at least talk about it, away from everyone else?’

She sighed as though in defeat. ‘Yes, okay.’

‘We could go out for a meal?’

She shook her head. ‘No thanks. I’ve seen enough food for one night.’

‘A drink then?’

‘That would be nice. But first I need to go home.
